South Devon is a fabulous all-year round holiday destination for those looking to enjoy a break with their dogs, but the autumn months are a particularly special time. Visitors to the area can enjoy a host of days out in Devon that are dog friendly, ranging from autumn festivals and fairs to local walks and trips around this picturesque region. Here are just some of the dog friendly Devon days out that can be enjoyed.
A Round Robin tour of South Devon
One of the best ways to see the area is with a round robin trip with the Dartmouth Steam Railway and Riverboat Company. Comprising of a boat trip along the river from Dartmouth to Totnes, a ride on a vintage open top bus from Totnes to Paignton, and a journey on the steam train from Paignton back to Dartmouth, this is one of many delightful days out in Devon to be enjoyed.
Dogs are of course welcome for a nominal fee of £2 per pet, meaning they too can feel the sea air in their fur and the rumble of the steam engine under their feet!
Walking in Dog Friendly Devon
With miles of unspoilt country lanes, a myriad of footpaths and the beautiful South West Coast Path, not to mention numerous dog friendly beaches, this area is a wonderful holiday destination for those looking to spend days out in Devon walking with their dog. Explore all that the region has to offer, stopping at one of the many dog friendly cafés and eateries for refreshments along the way.
Why not head out to explore the cliff paths around Salcombe, before popping in to the Victoria Inn in this popular town, where they have a special doggie menu including pig’s ears… yummy!
For humans, the menu is extensive and offers some of the finest local produce, including meat reared on nearby farms, and crab landed off the shores of Salcombe. Spend a relaxing hour enjoying delicious food and warming up beside the fire before heading back to the coastal path… one of the many ways to spend blissful days out in Devon!
Apple Pressing Weekend at Avon Mill
On 10th & 11th October, visitors can enjoy a visit to Avon Mill Café and Garden Centre for their Apple Pressing Weekend. One of the more traditional days out in Devon, you can bring along some apples that you have collected and press them in the oak press, ready to bottle the juice and take home with you. Delicious!
Browse the garden centre, pick up some treats from the Deli, and stop in the café for a traditional Devonshire Cream Tea, complete with homemade scones, jam and clotted cream. Don’t forget to bring your dog and they can enjoy refreshments too.
Finish your afternoon with a walk along the old railway line, spotting the wildlife along the way and enjoying the views over the River Avon. A visit to Avon Mill is a must when planning your dog friendly days out in Devon!
Explore the beaches!
This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is home to a number of dog friendly beaches – why not enjoy time exploring the hidden coves and sandy stretches of coastline… one of the top ways to spend days out in Devon this autumn.
A number of dog bans on selected beaches are lifted at the end of September, meaning there are an even larger number of beaches, just waiting to be discovered.
Why not visit Bantham, where dogs are permitted on the main beach from 30th September, before walking to the nearby dog friendly pub of The Sloop, where you can warm up with a delicious meal whilst relaxing beside the open fire.
Other autumn days out include the popular annual event the Dartmouth Food Festival. Taking place from 23rd-25th October, this fabulous festival offers three days out in Devon not to be missed, including a host of markets, demonstrations and workshops. Bring the whole family (and your dog!), and spend an enjoyable afternoon browsing the market stalls, selling the finest local produce.
Take the children to the Children’s Activities Marquee, run by locally based holiday lettings agency Coast & Country Cottages, where they can enjoy free biscuit decorating and face painting, whilst you have a cuppa from the adjacent Café Alf Resco pop up coffee shop. Your dog will love sniffing the scents and joining you to watch the various demonstrations from celebrity chefs, taking place in marquees across the town.
Soak up the vibrant atmosphere and take something delectable back to your holiday home for your tea – whatever cuisine you favour, you won’t be disappointed! This is surely one of the most unforgettable days out in Devon that you can enjoy this autumn.
